Meet the All About Mahj Team

Meet our team

We’re a group of Mahjong-loving women who believe in the power of community, connection, and laughter over the clack of the tiles. Each of us came to the game in our own way, but all of us share the same joy in teaching others how to play. Whether you’re joining a class, booking a private lesson, or just looking to learn with friends, we’re so glad you’re here.

Derby-loving, tile-taming, and proud founder of All About Mahj.

By day, I serve as a Finance Director for a Non-Profit and am a proud mom of two fabulous girls. When I’m not crunching numbers or chasing after my girls, you can find me immersed in the world of Mahjong. It’s where strategy meets socializing, and every move is a reason to celebrate. Join me as I share my passion for this timeless game and the joy it brings to my life. Here’s to fun, laughter, and a little friendly competition!

Fun Fact: I’m a Derby-obsessed, born-and-raised Louisvillian and proud 2006 Derby Princess Finalist! Sure, it’s not the most prestigious title, but once it scored me an impossible dinner reservation during Derby season—so, I’ll take it!

However, in 15 years of marriage, something has always kept us from making it to Churchill Downs on the first Saturday of May. Maybe it’s time to rethink my priorities—or my marriage? JK, husband! Wouldn’t trade you for vintage Chanel and mint juleps. Kiss kiss.

From beignets to sweet tea, and from tiles to travels—let’s Mahj.

I’m a full-fledged Mahjong addict. One class and I was hooked. Now I play weekly with my fabulous squad, the Mahj Mamas. Sure, I love the challenge and strategy, but it’s the laughter, camaraderie, and inside jokes that really make my heart sing. Mahjong magic, anyone?

When I’m not slinging tiles or perfecting my Charleston, I’m with my two favorite guys—my charming husband and our adorable son who’s rocking life at VHEE. They dabble in Mahjong too, but let’s just say they only “love” Mahjong if victory is theirs.

I can’t wait to meet you at the Mahjong table. Let’s share some laughs, build new friendships, and of course, Mahj on!

Fun Fact:I’m a New Orleans girl at heart who traded beignets for sweet tea when I moved to Vestavia over 17 years ago.

When the tiles are tucked away, my family and I are out exploring the U.S.A. one state—and one delicious meal—at a time. Great food and great adventures? Yes, please!

Family, mahjong and a dash of adrenaline—life played my way.

I’m your tile-taming, brain-teasing, fun-loving Mahjong enthusiast! Born in Dayton, OH and raised in Brandon, MS, I’ve been calling Birmingham home for almost 30 years now. By day, I work at a Christian Ministry, but when the sun sets (or the weekend hits), I’m all about those Mahjong vibes.

Growing up in a family of game aficionados, I thought I’d mastered it all-then along came Mahjong! The challenge, the strategy, the satisfying clack of the tiles—yes, please!

When I’m not teaching or playing Mahjong, I’m adventuring with my amazing family or being the coolest aunt ever to my four lively nieces and nephews—they’re like a full-time cardio workout with extra laughs. Let’s laugh, learn, and let the good times roll. Mahj on, my friends!

Fun Fact: When I travel, I’m the first to suit up for a zipline-nothing like soaring through the trees to fuel my adventurous spirit! When I’m grounded at home between adventures, I trade the thrill of ziplines for the serenity of watercolor painting. Who says you can’t mix a splash of artistry with a dash of adrenaline.

If it’s got tiles, strategy, and laughter—I’m all in.

If there’s a game to be played, I’m in – bonus points if it comes with snacks, strategy, and a little friendly trash talk.

Born in Florida, raised across the Southeast, and now planted in Birmingham, I’ve always had a thing for adventure – and a healthy dose of competition. By day, I work for a Christian nonprofit. By night (or let’s be honest, any free moment), I’m shuffling tiles and plotting my next Mahj win.

Games have always been my love language. I grew up around tables full of laughter, LOTS of rules debates, and a whole lot of strategy. So when I discovered Mahjong, I was hooked from the start.

These days, I get to teach this addictive game I adore, and it’s the perfect mix of connection, challenge, and fun.

Fun Fact: When I’m not playing Mahj with my daughters or friends, I’m raising three wild and wonderful kiddos with my husband, catering to one outrageously spoiled King Charles Cavalier and planning my next Disney trip.

Best friends turned Mahjong partners-in-crime (minus the crime).

Just like any great 90s RomCom (minus the romance), our eyes met across the craft table while volunteering for VBS—and the friendship was instant! Back then, we both had toddlers, so planning playdates and pool parties was easy. Now that those toddlers are teenagers, we’ve realized we have to be more intentional about making time for friends—and getting out of the house.

Enter Mahjong.

We learned together at a group lesson and fell in love with everything about the game—from setting a beautiful table to hearing the satisfying click of the tiles. It’s given us a fun, meaningful reason to gather with friends and family during this busy stage of life. Mahjong has pulled our girl’s nights out of the group chat and into real life—and even managed to pull our teens away from their phones!

Some days we bring our best strategy, others our best snacks, but every time we play, it’s a win. Come join the fun with us!

Fun Fact: Burgin and her husband, Chris, have 3 kids and a love pug, Roxie, and doodle dog, Cooper. They own Magic City Collectibles in Homewood.

Katie and her husband, Scott, have 2 kids and a lazy beagle, Ruby. She also works part-time at LiliPad/Gigi’s in Cahaba Heights.

Sarah
Sarah
Kentucky-born, Trussville-based, Mahjong-obsessed.

I’m originally from Northern Kentucky, but for the past 9 years I’ve called Trussville home. My husband, Cameron, and I have been married for 13 years—he’s a South Carolina fan, I’m a Kentucky fan, so game days can get interesting. We’ve got two wonderful daughters, Ailene (9) and Margaret (3), who keep life busy, fun, and loud.

By day, I work as VP of Community Relations at Regions Bank. By night (and weekends), you’ll usually find me around a Mahjong mat. What I love most about Mahjong is how it brings people together—new friends, old friends, lots of laughter, and never anyone leaving the table sad.

I’m so excited to be part of All About Mahj, and I can’t wait to share this game I love with you!

Fun Fact: love to travel, try new foods and wines, and explore different cultures. I even studied abroad in Valencia, Spain, and still daydream about tapas on sunny afternoons.

FAQ

What if I want to book a specific instructor?

Our booking system allows you to select your preferred instructor and see their availability when scheduling a class.

How long does a typical class last?

Most of our beginner classes run about 3 hours. That gives us plenty of time to go over the rules, practice the Charleston, and get you playing with confidence.

Do I need to bring anything to class?

Nope! We provide all the tiles, racks, and materials you’ll need. Just bring yourself and a willingness to learn (and maybe a friend or two).

What style of mahjong do you teach?

We teach American Mahjong, which uses the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) card. Our main goal is to make Mahjong fun and accessible—even if you’re used to different table rules.

Can I book a private class or party?

Yes! We offer private lessons, girls’ nights, parties, and custom events. Whether it’s for a birthday, bridal shower, or just for fun, we can bring the mahjong magic to you.

Absolutely. Many returning players find our beginner classes helpful as a refresher. If you’d prefer a more advanced group or private coaching, let us know—we’re happy to recommend the best fit.

Do I need to know how to play to take a class?

Not at all. Our classes are beginner-friendly and designed to teach you everything you need to know to enjoy the game confidently.

How many people are in each class?

Class sizes vary but typically range from 8 to 16 people, depending on the type of class and location.

Do you offer rentals for events?
